Michael Overy, managing director at Dae Ha UK, talks about working in Formula 1, biting his nails and supporting Watford FC UPCLOSE AND PERSONAL How long have you been working in the industry? I fell into the business five years ago. Following a career in Formula 1 overseeing logistics, tyres and operating the rear jack in pitstops for Stewart Grand Prix and Jaguar Racing, I joined the family business to get my life and weekends back. The company supplies bespoke, engineered tapes and adhesives for the manufacture of biosensors and blood glucose test strips. We were contacted by a company who produce the names, numbers and flocked badges for World Football to help with some of their products. Searching for raw material suppliers led me to Dae Ha Industrial’s door in Korea. On a two-day visit in 2013, I hit it off so well with the MD that by the time I had left Seoul, Dae Ha UK was in the planning, despite us not having one customer, or prior knowledge of the industry. I’ve not looked back since… What’s your most over-used word or phrase? I’ll just be a minute. Which tune can’t you get out of your head at the moment? Mayday by The Go! Team What’s your favourite sports team? Watford Football Club. My godfather took me to my first match in 1979 and I’ve supported them ever since. What’s your hidden talent? Taking photos. I like to think I have a keen eye. If you were to pursue another occupation, what would it be? My overriding passion after Dae Ha UK is travel and flying, so it would have to be an airline pilot. Or creating a bespoke travel agency. If you could be anywhere on earth right now, where would you be? Datai Bay, Langkawi, Malaysia. Which gadget or app couldn’t you live without? Bose noise cancelling headphones. Great for flying, as you can immerse yourself in a world of music or film and forget about everything else. If you could ask one person (living or dead) one question, what would you ask? Neil Armstrong – What was it like? Tomato ketchup or brown sauce? Has to be original: brown sauce in the am, tomato ketchup in the pm. What is the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you at work? Fortunately none so far, though I came extremely close back in my Formula 1 days. I was wearing a helmet camera to film live coverage of our pit stops for the first time. Just prior to the race, I needed to visit the washrooms. As I started to open my fire suit, I had the words “STOP, Michael, STOP!” ringing through my headset. “What’s up”? I asked on my radio. “Michael, your camera is live and you’re about to broadcast your naked self to the TV compound and beyond if you unzip any further.” What’s your most unappealing habit? I still bite my nails, though my wife may say something else. What’s your guilty pleasure? Planes, I’m fascinated by planes.
