Fespa took place in May in Berlin INDUSTRY EVENT www.images-magazine.com 32 images JUNE 2018 Review: Fespa Global Print Expo 2018 At the Fespa Global Expo in Berlin, Images saw the new Adelco AD Hybrid Digital system in action, had a preview of the new Roland DG RT-640Mmultifunctional printer, interviewed the CEOs of both M&R and MHM, was introduced to the new Kornit Storm HD, enjoyed some award-winning prints, and so much more... T he Fespa Global Print Expo was held at Messe Berlin in Germany in May, with decorators from the UK amongst the thousands of visitors who flocked to see what new machinery, inks and tools were on display. Also on display, in a manner of speaking, was the incoming CEO of M&R, Danny Sweem. Although he hadn’t officially started his new role at the time of the show – his first day was on 4 June – he flew over from the US to meet the equipment manufacturer’s European customers. [Check out next month’s issue of Images to read our exclusive show interview with him.] Danny, who was previously at Nazdar and was a screen printer in the early days of his career, was positive about the growth of the industry and M&R’s development capabilities, noting that the company is already “thinking beyond the hybrid”. Also looking to the future was Thomas Fröhlich, CEO of MHM. Thomas, along with Loser Holdings, which owns the Tesoma dryer brand, bought the screen printing machinery manufacturer from Arioli Group earlier this year. He talked about his plans for the company as he steers it towards an even more successful future, including developing a screen printing press combined with a dryer – an idea that will use all the talents of both MHM and Tesoma. The new machine will be aimed at the small to medium printer that’s tight on space. Our interview with Thomas will also appear in the July issue. There were fewer new product launches at the show this year; however, the Kornit Storm HD6 was a notable exception. Having introduced the new HD technology earlier in the year, Kornit has now extended its cost- Krowmark buys second UK Avalanche HD6 Kornit applied its new HD print engine to the Avalanche printer earlier this year, and it was the big reduction in the ink costs that enticed Mark Ponsford, managing director of Bognor Regis-based workwear company Krowmark, to become the second printer in the UK to buy the Avalanche HD6. "The cost per print is what made this so attractive: it's 30p a shirt, and even lower on white shirts," he commented. The deal with Amaya was confirmed at Fespa, where Mark explained that the new machine, due to be installed in June along with a new Chiossi e Cavazzuti dryer, will be replacing his screen printing operation. The cost of the new set-up is around £350,000 but it will bring in a cost-saving in consumables alone of around £13,000, says Mark, and if it's running at capacity, there is a potential profit of £18,000 a month.
