He argues that when we feel powerless, when the challenge we face feels insurmountable, stubborn optimism sustains action and gives our lives meaning and purpose. And there isn’t a better phrase to describe the response of the garment decoration industry to the coronavirus pandemic. Every day, for the past month or more, we’ve been speaking with Images readers who have stepped up to play their part in protecting the vulnerable in society and supporting the health care professionals who are working on the frontline. We already knew that our industry is resourceful, resilient and inventive, but even so we’ve been inspired by the actions of our readers in this current health crisis. At a time of anxiety and great uncertainty, printers and embroiderers have harnessed their creative flair and get-up-and-go attitude in order to make a difference. We love the embroidered NHS badges by All Points West Embroidery; we watched with pride the video of the entire Georgiou family manning Essential’s autos to print T-shirts for staff at the new Nightingale Hospital London; we’ve saluted the work of Creative Needle, which has created and digitised a fantastic embroidery design which it has shared for free to help spread the message that ‘staying home saves lives’ (likewise David Sharp Embroidery, which has shared its embroidery designs with more than 2,000 embroiderers to date). We’ve been humbled by Embroidery Works, which has been embroidering workwear for NHS and key workers and donating to the Giving Warm homeless charity; and applauded Embroidery Barn and Mrs Beasleys Bows for their face masks and face mask kits for NHS workers, care homes and local food banks. Stubborn optimism A particularly cruel aspect of Covid-19 is that it keeps us physically apart at a time when we most need to come together. However, the way that the industry has stepped up is a reminder that we are all in this together, and together we can make a difference. Stubborn optimism is the way. We will come through this, and when we do the garment decoration industry can look back with pride at its response.
