We’re delighted that it received such a positive response. Granted, it’s a small step in the grand scheme of things: in the Blue Planet 2 TV programme, Sir David Attenborough noted that eight million tonnes of plastic is dumped into the sea every year, with current estimates suggesting that there are approximately 51 trillion microscopic pieces of plastic in the planet’s oceans – 500 times the number of stars in our galaxy. However, what the move does mean is that we are no longer needlessly consigning tens of thousands of sheets of single-use plastic to landfill (and eventually, perhaps, the sea) every year. There’s no financial benefit in making the switch – indeed, the paper wrapper costs more than the polywrap it replaces – but sometimes you have to look beyond the bottom line and this was one of those times. It’s hugely encouraging to see major industry suppliers also taking positive steps to ensure a better future for our planet, with schoolwear manufacturers in the vanguard of sustainability initiatives. For this month’s buyer feature (‘A lesson in sustainability’, page 83) we spoke to Gary Spracklen, head teacher of The Prince of Wales School in Dorchester about working with Rosie Lees, the new owner of The Embroidery Barn – an eco-friendly and sustainability-led embroidery business – and his school’s choice of David Luke’s Eco-Uniforms. Likewise, in our schoolwear showcase (page 76) we highlight Rowlinson Knitwear’s new Eco- Jackets and in our profile of schoolwear supplier Trutex (‘Made to last’, page 45) managing director Matthew Easter explains how the Trutex Eco-Blazer fits with the company’s commitment to the environment and carbon neutrality. Outside of schoolwear, this month’s industry news section includes a report on sustainable fashion brand Écologie, which is now shipping all its orders with zero plastic packaging and using only reprocessed cardboard cartons, and also the switch by Colormaker Industries (the manufacturer of Permaset screen printing inks) to using 100% renewable electricity. In all cases, these businesses’ actions speak far louder than words alone. Is reducing the amount of single-use plastic in your business a concern, or even a priority? We’d like to hear your thoughts on this topic and also what steps your business is taking to reduce or eliminate its consumption of single-use plastics. Email us at editorial@images-magazine.com , putting ‘Plastics’ in the subject line. Jonathan Vince Plastic (not so) fantastic
