Then the global financial crash happened and organics found themselves on the backburner, deemed by many to be too expensive in a time of austerity, a luxury few customers could afford. The products didn’t go away, of course; brands such as Continental, Mantis and Neutral continued to not only develop and market organic garments but also to promote the sustainable clothing message. Nevertheless, the profile of organics dipped. But times and attitudes change, and organic cotton – not to mention a raft of other sustainable fabrics – is now, once again, high on the agenda for a growing number of garment brands, decorators, their customers and end users. Lars Bech, founder of Neutral, is an organic apparel evangelist and pioneer: in this month’s ‘Talking to...’ he explains why ecowear should be every garment decorator’s first choice (page 67). You’ll also find details of Neutral’s Ladies Roll Up Sleeve T-Shirt, along with new sustainable garment alternatives from FNB Original, No Sweat, Écologie by AWDis and many more leading brands in our Ecowear product showcase (page 61). We profile Ely-based Sigma Embroidery and Printing, which has embraced sustainability throughout its business operations (page 46), and speak to Jeff Keam about Asquith Group’s new eco garment labels (page 66). Nowhere is the move towards more sustainable apparel more evident than in the schoolwear sector, as we discovered when we visited the evergreen Schoolwear Show in October (see our show review on page 21). Rowlinson Knitwear, Trutex, William Turner, Winterbottom’s and David Luke (which celebrated its 10-year ‘eco-versary’ at the show) were just some of the exhibitors leading the way with modern, sustainable uniforms and accessories. What’s especially interesting about the schoolwear sector is that the end users – the schoolchildren who will be wearing the uniforms – are directly influencing the move towards more sustainable choices. Another schoolchild (Greta Thunberg) is the unlikely leader of a new global movement that is mobilising millions of children around the world to protest about climate change and demand a more sustainable way of living. It’s worth considering then, that these same children – who are already influencing how and from what their school uniforms are made – will, in just a few years’ time, be the company buyers, procurement officers, merchandisers and retailers with responsibility for purchasing not just schoolwear, but promotionalwear, workwear, fashion and sports apparel – ie your target market; your customers. This time, ecowear is here to stay. Jonathan Vince Meet your future customers
