As reported on page 22, the Bank of England calculates that the UK economy is picking up after last year’s election, with activity (and prices) in the housing market also on the rise. Especially pertinent to garment decorators are the government’s pledges to invest in major new infrastructure projects as part of its ‘levelling up’ programme, including hospitals, sea bridges and the £106bn HS2 high-speed rail link between London, Brimingham, Manchester and Leeds. These massive projects require workers – lots of them – and those workers require workwear. They also draw upon countless smaller suppliers whose staff also require work clothing. All of which suggests that decorators supplying the workwear market could soon be in line for an injection of new sales. Even without these high-profile initiatives, there’s anecdotal evidence that many businesses which were holding back on renewing their corporate wardrobes before the election are now beginning to spend again on new uniform items. Welcome news indeed. In this issue we profile Pro RTX’s new High Visibility range (page 52) – garments that are built for work and made to be seen – and showcase the latest summer corporate and workwear styles for the (hopefully) warmer (and drier) summer months ahead (page 55). We also speak with Peter Dumigan, MD of Hultafors Group UK, (owner of the Snickers and Dunderdon workwear brands) about the current trends in the workwear market (page 66); while Hayley Jane-Smith of Bakers Waste describes how the East Midlands-based waste and recycling company goes about sourcing its staff’s work clothing (page 67). For this month’s decorator profile (page 44) Mark Ludmon travelled to Blackpool to visit Mina Workwear and Embroidery – part of the Mina Group – and its founder Jake Adams. If Jake was a stick of rock he’d have the word ‘entrepreneur’ running through him: by the time he set up his first business at the age of 14 he’d already been working for local charities since the age of seven, and had ‘2012 Olympic torch bearer’ on his CV. Still only 21, he currently runs companies offering everything from personalised merchandise to banners and outsourced marketing services, and he’s just set up a new office in the south of Spain. (If you’re wondering what on earth you’ve been doing with your time, you’re not the only one!) Jake talks about the challenges of starting out in business while young, working with the third sector, and his ambitions for his rapidly expanding workwear and embroidery venture. On a somewhat less upbeat note, we extend our thoughts and best wishes to all those Images readers whose homes and businesses have been affected by Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis and the subsequent flooding.
