Hence, in mid-May I found myself on a packed Easyjet flight to Munich to spend a couple of days at this year’s show. As anyone who has ever spent time walking the aisles of an industry trade show knows only too well, the whole experience revolves around numbers. On stand after stand enthusiastic sales teams assail you with statistics: the total number of prints per hour that their new printer is capable of churning out; the maximum resolution in dpi of those next-generation digital print heads; maximum frame sizes in centimetres and print widths in metres; droplet volumes and sizes in pico-litres and microns; curing times and temperatures in seconds and degrees centigrade; expected return on investment periods in years or even months... These figures are undoubtedly useful when comparing different equipment and consumables prior to purchase, and for assessing product improvements and advances. However, there was one set of statistics that really added up for me. During Kornit’s traditional Fespa press conference, Ronen Samuel, the company’s CEO, touched on four industry mega trends that are shaping the decorated garments market: personal expression (personalisation); the influence of social media; the boom in e-commerce (and the simultaneous meltdown in traditional retail channels); and sustainability issues. He added that against the backdrop of these trends, the potential market growth for garment printing (digital, in particular) is huge: by Kornit’s calculations we are currently producing 15 billion impressions per year and this is expected to rise to 23 billion by the end of 2023. Twenty-three billion impressions – that’s an awful lot of printed T-shirts! As well as all the bright and shiny new products on show in Munich, the Fespa expo offers an invaluable opportunity to catch up with people, network and make new contacts. I was fortunate enough to spend some time talking to Tony Palmer of Palmprint Consultants, and US print veterans Rick Roth and Tom Davenport of The Ink Kitchen (if you haven’t checked out their website and podcasts head to: www.inkkitchen.com ). Each has a vast amount of experience of producing top quality printed garments profitably. I’m delighted that they have agreed to share their hard-earned knowledge with Images readers to help you grab a larger slice of the growing decorated garment market and those anticipated 23 billion impressions.
