If you’re supplying the trades, it could be bib and braces or work trousers teamed with a smart polo or sweat, or even a technical tee. For office workers it might be a smart collared shirt or blouse, matching chinos or skirt, and complementary knitwear. Whereas for customers in the leisure or travel industries it’s most likely to be teamwear of some description. But what about homeworkers? There are now four million people who work from home. Some might dress in a collar and tie before settling down to work at their kitchen table or in their home study each morning; however, the British Lifestyles Report by Mintel – which tracks spending across major consumer markets to provide a snapshot of how modern Britain dresses, shops and relaxes – suggests that they may well be opting for comfortable loungewear instead. The report shows that sales of loungewear, underwear and nightwear have increased by 18.8% in the last five years, with Brits spending £4.6 billion on these items in 2018. Last year, the average Brit spent £34 on lounge/nightwear (and no less than £38 on underwear, rising to £46 for 35-44s). Growth in this market is forecast to remain robust over the next five years, with consumer spending expected to reach £5.5 billion by 2023 - representing 19.1% growth. Jack Duckett, Mintel associate director of Consumer Lifestyles Research, commented: “More than four million people now regularly work from home, and their demand for comfort has arguably been a contributing factor to the booming sales of loungewear.” No doubt consumers, including students and people looking for comfortable apparel for lazy Sunday mornings, will continue to drive the growth in loungewear sales. But perhaps you should also be asking your workwear customers whether they employ homeworkers, and then be prepared to cross-sell some logoed loungewear to extend their corporate identity across the entire workforce. Judging by Mintel’s research, their homeworking employees would thank you! You’ll need some suitable garments to pitch to these customers, of course, and where better to start than our Mid-Year What’s New & Supplier Focus section. Here, you’ll find the new SF and Larkwood loungewear styles: ideal for retail sales; perfect for gifts, promotions and incentives; they may also be just the thing for homeworkers to wear while analysing spreadsheets or writing up annual reports. Turn to page 27 for details of these new styles plus the latest garment, equipment, machinery and consumables launches from selected industry suppliers. Jonathan Vince Lounging around at work
