NOVEMBER 2021 | VOL.30 NO.11 EDITORIAL B y the time you sit down to read this month’s issue of Images , the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) will be underway in Glasgow. The conference follows the publication of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report on the climate crisis, which UN secretary general Antonio Guterres has described as “Code Red for humanity”, and against a background of public and private criticism of government leaders’ efforts to limit climate change from, amongst others, environmental activist Greta Thunberg and the Queen. Within the garment and textile decoration industry, one of the sectors that is taking environmental issues seriously is schoolwear. From One+All’s new schoolwear recycling bins to Trutex’s 100% recycled polyester blazers and reduced shirt packaging, the predominant theme that ran throughout last month’s Schoolwear Show was ‘sustainability’ (see page 28 for the event review). Code Red The focus on sustainability isn’t limited to school uniforms, of course. Embroidery threads manufacturer Madeira was also exhibiting at the Schoolwear Show where its sales director Andrew Maylor demonstrated the company’s new Polyneon Green (recycled polyester) and Sensa Green (lyocell) threads (see pages 30 and 54 for more details of both new products). And for this month’s cover promotion, Gildan has addressed the wider sustainability picture, describing the raft of measures it is taking to ensure that it operates in an increasingly sustainable way (see page 42). In our December issue we’ll be focusing on the current ecowear choices available to printers and embroiderers. Ahead of that issue, we’d like to hear from you about what your business is doing, and the product choices you are making, to reduce your impact on the planet and operate in a more sustainable way. No single business can tackle ‘Code Red’ alone, but by pooling best practices we could, as an industry, be far more effective at implementing meaningful change. As well as the details of Madeira’s new Green threads, this issue has plenty of inspirational content for all embroiderers – from start-ups to industry veterans. Sean Barker of AJS provides a guide to getting going in headwear embroidery (page 62), while Justin Armenta of JA Digitizing Studios breaks down his complex, tactile, layered bear design (page 40). There’s even a fabulous, free Christmas-themed embroidery design download courtesy of David Sharp (page 73). Happy stitching!
