He was inaugurated as Fespa’s 18th president for the next three years at an assembly of Fespa’s national associations that took place during Fespa Global Print Expo 2021 in Amsterdam in October. He said: “As a speciality printer myself, I believe that Fespa has a vital role to play in supporting our global community to continue to evolve, innovate and rise to the challenges and opportunities that face us, in particular the imperative to place more emphasis on environmental responsibility.” Christophe replaces outgoing president Christian Duyckaerts, who has been appointed Fespa’s Asia ambassador. imagesmag.uk/fespa-christophe Permaset inks producer steps up sustainability Colormaker Industries, which produces water-based Permaset screen printing inks, is taking steps to ensure its products and production are even more sustainable and eco-friendly. It is looking at getting its Permaset Aqua SuperCover White approved for the Global Organic Textile Standard (Gots) standard and has long-term aims to extend Gots-approval to other Permaset inks. Being water-based, Permaset inks already appeal to decorators seeking a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastisol inks. The company, based in Australia, has also pledged to become ‘carbon neutral’ by 2025 – ahead of its previous target of 2030. To achieve this, it installed 100 kW of solar panels two years ago and, because of the amount of surplus electricity that it generates, it is now looking to electrify more of its inputs that rely on fossil fuels. Other steps have included buying more efficient pumps and an electric vehicle last year as well as buying and planting trees to capture and store atmospheric carbon dioxide. imagesmag.uk/colormaker- carbon Prama Bhardwaj wins Climate+ Award Prama Bhardwaj, the founder and CEO of garment manufacturer Mantis World, has won an award from Textile Exchange for sustainable textile industry leaders. She was one of five winners of the inaugural Ryan Young Climate+ Awards, which honours people driving progress towards the defining goal of Textile Exchange’s Climate+ Strategy: a 45% greenhouse gas reduction in textile fibre and material production by 2030. The award was established in memory of the late Ryan Young, who was the CEO of Textile Exchange from 2017 to 2020. Prama was recognised by Textile Exchange as a ‘Climate Leader’ for converting all the brand’s cotton to organic six years ahead of schedule. Mantis World has been praised for being the first printwear company in Europe to introduce organic cotton to its market. imagesmag.uk/mantis-leader ECO INDUSTRY NEWS Madeira and Incorporatewear among PCIAW winners Madeira UK and Incorporatewear were among the winners at this year’s PCIAW Awards celebrating excellence in the professional clothing industry. Madeira UK won the Sustainability Award because of its achievements in developing eco-friendly threads such as Polyneon Green, made from recycled post-consumer PET, and Sensa Green, made from biodegradable lyocell. Highly commended went to Plymouth-based Project Plan B, which supplies garments made from recycled yarns. Madeira UK’s managing director, Karen Burrows, was one of the winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award.
