The founder of multi-brand distributor PenCarrie, Paul played a fundamental role in the development and growth of the UK garment decoration industry for nearly 30 years. With his passing, the industry has lost a genuine talisman. I recall taking the train to Exeter in 1994 to interview Paul for a cover story on PenCarrie’s imminent expansion. I listened with rapt attention as he outlined his vision for how the industry and multi-brand garment distribution would develop. During a lengthy and wide ranging conversation he commented: “The distributors of the future will need the courage to invest in bigger and bigger buildings, better and better systems, more and more product ranges, and an ever increasing inventory. “In the future, end-user customers will be looking more and more to their partner printer or embroiderer for new ideas, both for products and decoration... We aim to provide our customers with the widest possible product base, so that they can capitalise on the opportunity to sell more products. “We predict that customers will become more informed and ever more discriminating and we expect to see the trend towards better quality product continue – in years to come, price alone will not be enough to make a sale.” Those were early days for multi-brand garment distribution in the UK. Rereading his comments now, I can’t help but be struck by their presience. Back then, I don’t think I had any inkling of just how big and how fast this industry could and would grow, but I have no doubt that Paul did. What was instantly evident during that conversation all those years ago, however, was Paul’s calm determination, razor sharp intellect and entrepreneurial nous. His combination of gravitas and easy charm compelled others to seek out and listen to his thoughts, opinions and advice, which, by all accounts, was always freely and willingly given. We pay tribute to Paul and his contribution to the UK garment decoration industry on pages 30 and 31, where some of those who knew him best – friends, colleagues and competitors – share their memories and pay their own tributes to one of the industry’s “gentlemen” and “a very fine man”. Our thoughts go out to Paul’s family and to all those at PenCarrie, where his admirable legacy lives on. Jonathan Vince The industry has lost a talisman Follow us on social media: @imagesmaguk
