A piece of cake? Challenging but ultimately doable? A waking nightmare? Everybody has their own experience of fixing ink to polyester garments – many of them involving prints in unwanted shades of rose pink and ice blue! Whatever your opinion of polyester and the particular challenges it poses for decorators, there’s one thing that’s for certain – it represents an opportunity. Polyester apparel continues to be one of the growth areas in the brandable garments market. From retail fashion through athleisure, sports and teamwear to workwear, it is selling in ever greater volumes – the latest industry figures suggest that revenue from the global polyester T-shirt market is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 5.5%. In this issue, we grab this topic by the horns: experts in screen, transfer/vinyl and DTG printing pool their knowledge to guide you through the complexities of printing onto polyester and share proven materials and techniques that will make your job that little bit easier (and more profitable). Kornit’s Sharon Donovich introduces the new NeoPoly technology and explains what it could bring to your DTG operation (page 44); Neil Stevenson of Grafityp, Siser’s UK partner, tackles the best approaches to avoiding unsightly marks and distorted colours when heat pressing on polyester (page 48); while Tony Palmer of Palmprint Consultants digs deep into the issue of dye migration and advises on how to stop the dye from racing up polyester fibres faster than “the guy at the end of the dryer running to get his coat as soon as the press goes into outlet mode” (page 46). Once you’ve absorbed all this expert advice head over to page 65 where you’ll find the latest line-up of sports and teamwear styles from the industry’s top brands on which to practise your newly acquired knowledge and skills. Also in this issue, Joe Wigzall of Roland DG shows you how to elevate your designs (and margins) by using resin doming; see how it’s done in our easy-to- follow step-by-step guide on page 62. Brett Newman of Hybrid Services explains why now is the time to be getting into wide format digital printing (page 58). We talk to Alessandro Silva of Monti Antonio as the Italian calender manufacturer celebrates its 60th anniversary (page 56). And you’ll definitely want to check out our Anatomy of a print feature (page 30), which deconstructs this year’s Fespa award-winning T-shirt print from Russian print shop Imaika.
